Derek Hansen

Derek Hansen is a faculty member in the Information Technology program within the School of Technology at BYU. He teaches courses on human-computer interaction, social media analytics, and web development. Dr. Hansen received his PhD from the University of Michigan's School of Information and taught for 4 years at the University of Maryland's iSchool prior to coming to BYU.

His work focuses on designing novel social technologies and games that improve the human condition. Derek Hansen's research falls within the broader field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and the subfield of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), which aims to design and evaluate novel collaborative systems that blend computational tools and human capabilities. One line of research focuses on developing novel techniques and tools to analyze online social relationships. Another line of research focuses on designing novel social technologies and games to motivate and orchestrate volunteer efforts to serve the public good.

He helped develop and launch the DUST game that has been featured on this website. He also had students place in the top 3 at the ACM-CHI Student Game Competition (Serious Games track):
