There has been increasing interest in the work practices and education of user experience (UX) designers, particularly in relation to methods that support design activity. In this talk, he will address the ways in which practitioners, educators, and students conceive of design methods, including: 1) the ontological and epistemological positioning of design methods; 2) the content knowledge and mindset required to engage design methods in one’s practice; and 3) the tensions between academic and practitioner conceptions and utilization of methods. He will conclude with implications for the study of design practice and the education of UX designers.
